How to Care for and Clean a Flat Cap

Flat caps are designed to last for years, but proper care is key to maintaining their shape, colour, and quality. Different materials -wool, tweed, linen, leather - require slightly different cleaning approaches.

General Flat Cap Care

  • Handle with Clean Hands: Oils from your skin can transfer to the fabric, so pick up your cap with clean hands.
  • Brush Regularly: Use a soft hat brush to remove surface dust and keep the fibres fresh.
  • Store Properly: Keep your cap in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to prevent fading.

Can You Put a Flat Cap in the Washing Machine?

In most cases, no. Machine washing risks shrinking, warping, and damaging the brim. Always check the care label, but for high-quality caps, professional dry cleaning (for wool/tweed) or careful spot cleaning is safest.

Refreshing a White or Light-Coloured Cap

White or pale caps can show marks more easily:

  • Gentle Soap: Use a diluted solution of mild soap and cold water.
  • Soft Cloth Only: Avoid scrubbing, dab carefully.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: Any soap residue can cause water marks when it dries.
