GUIDE TO Men's Flat Caps

GUIDE TO Men's Flat Caps

The flat cap, also referred to as the "driving cap," is a perennial favourite at Lock & Co. Hatters.

How to wear a flat cap?

Flat caps are made to be worn centrally on the head, rather than cocked to one side. A well-fitting flat cap will hug the back of the head nicely and not feel too loose elsewhere.
If you don't already know your head size, wrap a soft tape measure around your head, 2 cm above the ears and across the middle of your forehead. The size of the flat cap you require will be determined by the number you receive (whether in centimetres or inches). If you are in between sizes we recommend you size up.

Rolling instructions:

Lock & Co. flat caps are designed to be rolled. Place the cap on a flat surface and tuck the peak under the cap band, rolling the cap in half.

FAQs

What makes a flat cap a flat cap?

A flat cap is a rounded cap with a stiffened but malleable peak, and would typically be made from a singular piece of cloth (most commonly wool, tweed, or cotton). At Lock and Co. we are known for our array of flat caps of various styles and fabrics, such as linen, Escorial wool, and cashmere.

How to roll your flat cap?

Tweed hats by Lock & Co. are designed to be rolled for easy travel.  Place the cap on a flat surface and roll the cap in half, tucking the peak under the cap band. Roll up your hat and store it in a hat tube or in your luggage. When you arrive at your destination, always unroll and reshape your cap to bring it back to its original shape

How should a flat cap fit?

A good fitting flat cap will mean the cap hugs the back of the head nicely and does not feel too loose elsewhere.

What size do you recommend I purchase in caps? Do I get the same size as a fedora/trilby I already have?

We do recommend going up a size in a flat cap. The peak of a cap should be 'easy' and the overall fit should be snug on the back of the head.
