How Should a Flat Cap Fit?

The right fit is essential for both comfort and style. A well-fitting flat cap should feel secure without being tight, sit correctly on your head, and complement your face shape.

How a Flat Cap Should Sit

  • Snug but comfortable: The cap should hug the circumference of your head without leaving marks on your forehead.
  • Just above the brows: A good rule is for the cap to sit about 1-2cm above your eyebrows.
  • No gaps at the sides: If you see significant space between your head and the crown, the cap is too big.

Choosing the Right Size

Most flat caps come in specific sizes, so it’s worth taking the time to measure your head accurately.

  1. Use a soft tape measure.
  2. Place it around your head, roughly 2 cm above your ears and across the middle of your forehead.
  3. Compare your measurement to Lock & Co.’s sizing chart.
  4. If you fall between sizes, consider sizing up for comfort - especially for winter caps that you may wear over thicker hair.

Face Shape and Flat Cap Styles

The right flat cap style can balance your features and flatter your face:

Round Faces

A slimmer, flatter ivy cap creates a lengthening effect.

Square Faces

Softer, rounded crowns help soften angular jawlines.

Long Faces

A fuller crown (like a duckbill) adds proportion.

Oval Faces

Lucky you, almost any flat cap style will suit.

How it Should Feel

When properly fitted, a flat cap should:

  • Stay put even when you bend forward slightly.
  • Feel comfortable for extended wear - no pinching or headaches.
  • Look balanced from all angles, not too far back on the head or perched too high.
